AI Adoption Exchange (informal networking)

A small, peer-level discussion for engineers, researchers, and industry practitioners about how companies are actually adopting AI: where teams are in the journey from experiment to production, what is working, and where they are stuck. No slides, no presentations, and no sales pitches.

Where: Leucadia Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant, 7748 Regents Road, San Diego, CA 92122.

Organizer: Chhavi Jain, Vice Chair. Part of an ongoing IEEE initiative to connect practitioners working on real-world AI systems and deployment challenges.

Community participationThe organizers reported approximately 30 attendees at this first peer discussion on real-world AI adoption.

Participant affiliations recorded in the meetup sheet included Qualcomm, ASML, Deloitte, CheckIt, Extreme-Waves, Stackitgroup.com, Andare Consulting, Aspired Future, and Live AI Dream, as well as UC San Diego, San Diego State University, and California State University San Marcos. Lecture: “Neoteric Frontiers in Cloud and Quantum Computing”

Speaker: Dr. Rajkumar Buyya (IEEE Fellow, ACM Fellow), Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor and Director of the Quantum Cloud Computing and Distributed Systems (qCLOUDS) Laboratory, University of Melbourne, Australia.

Dr. Buyya was named an ACM Fellow in the 2025 class for research advancing cost- and energy-efficient cloud resource management and scheduling. His honors also include the IEEE Computer Society’s Technical Committee on Cloud Computing Research Impact Award and the IEEE Technical Community on Services Computing Research Innovation Award.

The University of Melbourne reports that software arising from his research, including Aneka and CloudSim, has been used by academic institutions and businesses in more than 50 countries. Read the university’s research impact profile.

The lecture connected the San Diego community with research from Australia, giving U.S.-based researchers and industry practitioners an opportunity to learn about ongoing work at Dr. Buyya’s laboratory and discuss emerging directions in cloud and quantum computing.

The talk looked at next-generation cloud and quantum computing, including AI-driven infrastructure, edge-cloud integration, and emerging quantum frameworks, followed by a live Q&A.

Hosted by the IEEE Signal Processing Society San Diego Chapter, as part of the IEEE San Diego Section technical program. Free to attend. Event host and contact: Chhavi Jain, Vice Chair.

Community participationThe lecture drew participation from professionals working at Qualcomm, Apple, Meta, AMD, and other San Diego technology companies. Participants were very inspired by Dr. Buyya’s presentation. The talk covered a range of open-source tools and techniques from his laboratory in Australia, prompting further discussions among participants beyond the live session. During the presentation, attendees expressed interest in trying the open-source tools discussed and requested reference materials afterward.
