\nEvaluating Autonomous Vehicles at UC San Diego
\nSpeaker: Henrik I. Christiansen
\nAbstract:
\n< p>Speaker Bio:
\nAutonomous vehicles have a l ong history in San Diego. As we transition not only to use of autonomous v ehicles on the highway but also for micro-mobility services it is of inter est to explore how we can solve problems such as integration into local co mmunities\, but also leverage use of technologies such as sensor fusion\, object (road-user) tracking\, dynamic planning\, and machine learning to b uild next generation vehicles for community service. Over the last 2-3 yea rs we have setup a laboratory at UC San Diego to develop\, test and evalua te technologies for autonomous vehicles. In this presentation we will outl ine the overall program\, some of the key challenges\, results from the re search/educational efforts and discuss our strategy for the future.
\nHenrik I Christensen is a di stinguished professor of computer science and engineering at UC San Diego and the director of robotics. He also coordinates the Autonomous Vehicle L aboratory. He is the main author of the US National Robotics Roadmap (2009 \, 2013\, 2016 & 2020). He has published more than 300 papers and 8 books. He was awarded the Engelberger Award\, the highest honor from the robotic s industry 2014 and also named Boeing Supplier of the Year 2014. He has tr ansitioned technology to many companies across automotive\, aerospace\, lo gistics\, diagnostics and AI. He is the co-founder of six companies. He is a fellow of IEEE and AAAS.\nLocation: Virtual ta lk by Webex at the RSVP link below.

\n2021 IEEE Consultants’ Network of San Diego – Topic: “Patent Eligibility of Software”
\nSpeaker: Rob Cogan\, Continuum Law
\nAbstract
\n“Patent eligibility” is critically important for software inventions. The 2014 Supreme Court case Alice Corp. v. CLS Bank International held th at putting an old method on a computer would not make it patentable. This decision turned the world of computer-related inventions on its head becau se it created so many ambiguities. Since then\, several more Supreme Court decisions and carefully crafted sets of guidelines from the Patent Office have provided some clarification. Today’s rules are equally applicable to complex software as to game apps. A better understanding of patent eligib ility goes hand-in-hand with a better understanding of value. We will also touch on such matters as whom to name as the inventor of a program genera ted by artificial intelligence\, copyright ownership of code\, and working as a software consultant.
